AI Ethics in Healthcare: Training Session at Hospice Malta

Last week I had the pleasure of delivering a training session to healthcare workers at Hospice Malta on some ethical issues relating to the use of AI tools in healthcare.
I spoke on how trust should be preserved by being aware of technical ethical issues pertaining to opacity, peer-disagreement, responsibility and manipulation. However we also focused on the more important issue of preserving the patient-doctor therapeutic relationship and maintaining a human touch as a means of respecting and upholding patients’ dignity.
It was encouraging and consoling to see so many professionals eager to discuss how to serve their patients better by using AI tools ethically and safely.
And as a timely postscript, on the very same day, Pope Leo XIV addressed doctors in Rome on remarkably similar issues. You can read his address here.
