Rev Dr Jean Gové is a Research Affiliate at the AI & Humanity Lab at the University of Hong Kong. His current research is primarily focused on questions relating to cognition and consciousness in AI. He is also engaged in exploring certain ethical aspects of AI tools, such as AI manipulation, and wider transhumanist issues. He obtained his PhD in analytic philosophy at the University of St Andrews.
Locally, Fr Gové is the Diocesan Coordinator for AI-related activity for the Archdiocese of Malta. He is leading initiatives to integrate AI literacy within primary and secondary Church schools, alongside the setting up of comprehensive formation programmes for educators and pastoral workers.
Fr Gové frequently guest-lectures at the AI Department at the University of Malta. He also currently occupies a number of advisory roles and is the Coordinator of the European AI Research Group within the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education.
As a Research Affiliate at the AI and Humanity Lab at the University of Hong Kong, Fr. Jean Gové’s research focuses on philosophical issues in AI, specifically those relating to philosophy of mind, language, and epistemology.
As a member of the ad-hoc Committee under the Social Affairs Commission of COMECE (Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union), Fr Jean is participating in a project that seeks to present a position paper to EU institutions on the evolving landscape of work.
Malta currently lacks a standardized AI curriculum in schools, leaving a critical gap in education. In response, Fr Jean has launched short professional training sessions for teachers in church schools, focusing on the essential skills needed to introduce AI tools in classrooms.
In collaboration with the Pastoral Formation Institute, Fr. Jean Gové is giving a specialized short course for pastoral workers. This course is designed to help them understand both the potential benefits and risks associated with AI.
Magisterium AI is an advanced AI platform designed to provide insights into Church teachings and theological topics. As a consultative researcher and member of the Scholarly Advisory Board, Fr Jean plays a key role in expanding and refining the platform’s knowledge base.
